BOOK REVIEW: We Are Not Ourselves by Matthew Thomas

Honestly, there were times where it was easy to zone out, simply because this is so long. The audiobook helped keep my focus in places I do think I would have put this down and never picked it back up again were I reading the physical text. That alone is why it isn’t a five-star read for me.
We Are Not Ourselves is a weird one, and has some questionable morals from the protagonist at times- like she may or may not have taken advantage of her husband when he was suffering from dementia. Still, the actions and opinions of each character do align with the person they are, even when disagreeable. Matthew Thomas did a great job of giving each character in the novel a fully fleshed out personality that was undeniable.
It’s hard to say I recommend this book because it is so heavily literary and time period specific, but I will say if you are a fan of Tennessee Williams and ever wished his plays were full length novels, THIS is the book for you. It gives off Streetcar Named Desire/The Glass Menagerie vibes big time.
