BOOK REVIEW: The Martian by Andy Weir

Movie Tie-In covers can be ugly and distracting, but this isn’t the worst.

I am not the biggest fan of space as a setting, especially when the driving conflict is being lost in space. However, Mark Watney offers his own comedic relief, cutting through tense moments and scary circumstances.

The technical jargon and scientific breakdowns of information may overwhelm some readers, but Weir does a good job of explaining complex concepts in layman’s terms through Watney’s wry sense of humor. You as a reader are left feeling equal to the main character instead of being talked down to by him like other books’ genius characters do.

Understandably, The Martian isn’t going to be every reader’s cup of tea, but I still highly recommend giving it a shot if you haven’t yet. If he hasn’t hooked you in the first twenty pages, then by all means DNF it, but you might be pleasantly surprised by the genuine person Andy Weir created in Mark Watney.
