BOOK REVIEW: Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel

Engrossing. Gross, and engrossing. Those are the two words I would use to describe this book. I totally get why a lot of people don’t like this book- triggers for sexual assault, incest, abuse, suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, etc.- but if you can handle those things, READ. THIS. BOOK. I would 100% watch this if it were a movie, so I need Netflix to option it ASAP.
The main protagonist, Lane, is a bit rough around the edges and can be unagreeable, but there is definitely reasons for it. Her treatment of her on-again-off-again boyfriend is the only thing I would say is inexcusable, but still plausible. It isn’t unheard of for someone who is a victim to behave the ways she behaves, much like her cousin’s wild child ways is another equally plausible response to the abuse the girls suffered from very young ages.
If you have a taste for taboo (VC Andrews fans anywhere?) and a strong stomach for triggers, this is definitely your book.
