Trevor Noah’s voice is as engaging and unique in print as it is on camera. He’s hilarious, and what’s more, he manages to be hilarious while detailing truly horrendous facts from his life- making his stories harder hitting and more heart-wrenching.

Noah comes across as honest and pure throughout his memoir, even when it’s unflattering to himself or his mother. But his honesty is what makes him so endearing. As you read Born A Crime, you never once second guess his telling of events, or if he’s pulling punches. He recounts memories of his mother in a way that feels like she’s there telling them, too, and you’ll walk away loving his mom dearly.

Trevor Noah tells a story about the after-effects of Apartheid and the everlasting results of racism, misogyny, and ignorance in South Africa, but it’s relatable in a human sense. His story feels universal- and it is universal- and he manages to grapple with a topic that most historians fail to properly explain.
